A few years back, this time of the year, a lot of you would have been on your way to the Oppikoppi music festival. In stead, we all find ourselves in the middle of the South African lockdown, hopefully still staying and working from home as far as we can. If you’re 35 and older, you’ve hopefully gone for your first covid19 vaccine with second jab on the not too distant horizon, somewhere during September. The 18 to 35 year old’s will have a shot at their first jab as spring day rolls in and they will be eligible for the second dose from around mid-October. Assuming people take around a month to get their asses into gear, some semblance of normalcy should start settling in South Africa around the middle of November, 2021. If we all pull our fingers out of our asses, this Christmas should be a lot less kak than last year’s Christmas. Eye’s on the prize, peeps. Please stay the fuck out each other’s way until we can beat this thing. Imagine we can sort this kak out in as little as 3 months from now? All things considered, it is really a small price to pay for more freedom.
Just stay at home and kyk some TV shows, man. Dis mos lekker? I’ve got a killer selection that should last you the entire long weekend – a limited series for each day of the weekend.
The Flight Attendant
You should put this right at the top of your list for the weekend! We started watching this brand new series last night and it is quite different from anything else out there at the moment. There’s a fair amount of comedy, a bit of drama, a bit of thriller and a whole lot of mystery. Half an episode in, you will see what I mean. When a flight attendant meets a handsome passenger, she decides to spend a very drunk night with him. But she wakes up in the morning next to a dead body. The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco stars as Cassie Bowden, a reckless alcoholic and flight attendant who drinks while on duty and sleeps with her passengers. She drinks a LOT! When she wakes up next to a dead body during a layover with no recollection of the night before, her life changes dramatically.
From the peanut gallery:
“OMG! Penny has made it as an actress!!!”
Your Honor
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) stars as New Orleans judge, Michael Desiato who kicks off a tragedy when he conceals evidence to protect his teenage son from deadly retaliation after he kills the son of Mafia kingpin in a hit-and-run accident. Michael’s actions accidentally frame a young gang member for murder and this could potentially ignite an all-out war. I’m klapping this as soon as I’m done with The Flight Attendant.
From the peanut gallery:
“I swear Cranston goes down as one of the greatest actors ever”
Clarice
We briefly touched on this last week when we listed the classic The Silence of The Lambs. Last week Clarice was still only available on DStv but a day or two ago, it also became available on Showmax. Clarice follows aussie actress Rebecca Breeds as Clarice Starling, an FBI Agent, one year after the events which took place in The Silence of The Lambs where she returns to the field in pursuit of serial murderers and sexual predators. If you close your eyes you’ll swear it’s Jodie Foster in the role of Clarice. Rebecca Breeds looks and sounds exactly like Jodie did and her mannerisms are the same.
From the peanut gallery:
“Regardless of whether or not this show is good, the actor doing Clarice is doing a great impression of young Jodie Foster”
Devilsdorp
OK, now please take my advice 100% to heart when you decide yo watch Devilsdorp – you need at least 4 hours set aside to watch this doccie in one go, so make sure you have the time, because it is going to suck you in and keep nailed to the TV, your laptop, tablet, phone or whatever you use to stream TV series and movies. I klapped it in one go earlier this week between 5am and 10am one morning. And I’m going to watch it again because my wife hasn’t seen it yet. Here is my full take on the doccie earlier today, but it basically boils down to this: Devilsdorp is a true crime documentary series covering a spate of horrific murders in Krugersdorp. The killings took place between 2012 and 2016 with 11 people being murdered during that time. The documentary examines the origins of the murders and the shocking court revelations over four episodes. You need to strap in because it is one fucking wild ride!
From the peanut gallery:
“Jy dink nog jy volg nog ‘n liniêre storie en dan vorm daar skielik ‘n diepe donker what-the-fuck cloud bokant jou kop. Dit hou nie vir ‘n fok op met what-the-fuck-oomblikke reën tot die titles rol aan die einde van die laaste epsiode nie.”

#10. Five Tiger: an ethereal short film that touches on big social issues Five Tiger is a South African drama written and directed by Nomawonga Khumalo. A short film clocking in at just over 10 minutes, it comes across as an excerpt from a broader work. This observation is even more accurate when you consider that Khumalo used her short as a stylistic proof of concept for her upcoming feature film, The Bursary. |

#7. Heist is “a fun true-crime series with a lot of heart” As the trailer says, think about it … if you had an opportunity to steal something, anything, significant – without getting caught or facing consequences – would you do it?
