Jirre, South Africa, what the actual excruciating fuck? Pandemic plus looting plus country burning down plus winter. There is really not much to say or add about the shit our country has been through this past week. Liewe fok. At least it weekend after what felt like the longest week ever. Oh and the coldest. On the good news front on the pandemic side of things, you can now go register yourself to get vaccinated if you’re 35 years or odder. Go do it over here.
Let’s just forget about all the kak for one weekend. Let’s crack a smile. Here is a lekker list of kak funny comedies, of which most of them will make you cringe for the characters’ sake:
The Righteous Gemstones
The first two shows features Danny McBride and this should be good enough on their own to get you trough the weekend. John Goodman and Adam DeVine also joins him as members of a world-famous televangelist family. They lead super opulent lives funded by their followers, but it could all be threatened by their dark secrets. Danny McBride got the inspiration for the show after moving to Charleston and seeing how prevalent churches were in that area. This is why I don’t go to fokken church!
From the peanut gallery:
“Trailer does it no justice…its an amazing show!”
Vice Principals
Two vastly different Vice Principals – the popular guy and the loser outcast type – go head to head in the hopes of becoming the new Principal at their High School. Certain events however see them teaming up and joining force against their newfound common enemy. The original concept for this TV show was set to be a feature film and I think it is never too late to still do it. This series is fantastic. Danny McBride is as a giant, entertaining doosgesig as you would expect from him.
From the peanut gallery:
“Loved it, first episode, I was like WTF, by the second, and now re-watching all 9 of them, it is hilarious. Extremely clever and well written. Well done to them. I am glad I have watched the first series before it becomes a cult classic!”
Barry
A low-level hitman suffering from depression wants out of the assassination’s business. Convincing himself that this will be his last hit, he travels to Los Angeles to execute a hit on an actor who is pomping a mobster’s wife. He follows the guy into an acting class and ends up enamored with the group amateur but eager hopefuls, especially dedicated student Sally, who he start smaaking stukkend. Even more the reason for him wanting a new life, but handler, Fuches, is a different story. Barry’s criminal past just won’t leave him be. Bill Hader who plays Barry, is used to his SNL comedy sketches and said that he found it challenging to sacrifice jokes for dramatic scenes.
From the peanut gallery:
“This show is absolutely brilliant so far. It’s such a masterful blend of dark humor with moments of real heartbeat skipping drama, matched with enticing performances from the whole cast – there’s not a lot else like it out there. Deeply entertaining, I couldn’t look away.”
Get Shorty
An absolute brilliant remake of the hit movie which featured John Travolta. Miles Daly (Chris O’Dowd) is a gangster and attempts to change his profession and find a way into Hollywood which sees him entangled in a web of filmmakers and crime bosses. I would highly recommend that you pair Get Shorty with Barry to have one befokte action packed gangster and comedy weekend! Oh, and if you’re not a fan of Ray Romano like myself – don’t worry. After this show you will have major respect for him! The car Miles drives is the same one Ryan Gosling drives in La La Land
From the peanut gallery:
“This show is such a gem! I rarely binge shows but this one is seriously worth it.”
Swedish Dicks
This goes to the top of my weekend list becasue I missed it somehow and it sounds so bad that it has to be good! Two private investigaters, Ingmar and Axel, have stabilized their position in the PI world. Ingmar skeems the time is now to become licensed detectives but creates unexpected immigration problems for Axel. Turns out he is an illegal alien. While taking on new high status cases, competing against their arch enemy Jane McKinney, they also have to solve this visa problem. Othwerwise Swedish Dicks becomes Swedish Dick. Like I said, sounds like a piele show! Keanu Reeves appears in this series as a frequent collaborator, and friend of Peter Stormare, hence this chirp from the peanut gallery:
From the peanut gallery:
“So this is what John wick use to do?”
I’m Sorry
A seemingly-confident comedy writer, wife, and mom comically exposes her inner immaturity and neuroses through unexpected life situations. Andrea Savage had to be cut out of iZombie in the middle of filming, to start on this project, leading to her sudden, and controversial exit from that show.
From the peanut gallery:
“Healthiest married couple on TV!!!! Thank you Andrea for laughs and a real look at adult (married couples) conversations.”
Veep
I started re-watching this show and try to get in one episode per day. It has to be the most comedy-quote dense series on earth. You have to pay attention the entire time or you will miss a gem. Former Senator Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus who played Elaine in Seinfeld) has accepted the call to serve as Vice President of the United States. The job is nothing like she imagined and everything she was warned about. The most foul mouthed politician I’ve ever seen in a show, let alone president and vice president. Selina wears red in the first scene of every first episode of each season.
From the peanut gallery:
“Veep and Succession happen in the same universe. Change my mind!”
Curb Your Enthusiasm
I don’t know what it is, but despite having a sky-high rating and recommended by a whole bunch of my friends, I just can’t seem to get into this show. I’ve tried a few times. What am I missing? Maybe it is for you? Seinfeld co-creator Larry David stars as himself in a comedy series that presents a self-deprecating depiction of his life. There is no script to each episode, just a heavily detailed plot outline, which the actors and actresses all improvise.
From the peanut gallery:
“Larry has been in his late 50s for the last 30 years. It’s like he was born as a bald avuncular Jew and just stayed the same his whole life”
Girls
Again, not something for me, but maybe this is a millennial think and I’m too fokken old as a Gen-Xer to get into it. Girls follows the assorted humiliations, disasters and rare triumphs of four very different twenty-something girls: Hannah, an aspiring writer; Marnie, an art gallery assistant and cousins Jessa and Shoshanna. Adam Driver has never seen the show due to his refusal as an actor to ever watch his own performances onscreen. I think that is super fokken weird!
From the peanut gallery:
“This show changed my life. I still watch reruns today.”

#7. 15 shows and movies based on books The debate over book-to-screen (big and small) adaptations is a timeless one. Bibliophiles and cinephiles create a perfect Venn diagram, with their opposing views meeting in the middle where sometimes common ground is found. Sometimes it’s a book you loved, as a child or an adult, that suddenly finds itself on the table in a Hollywood studio. Depending on how it’s handled, it can be glorious or it can be an unmitigated disaster – both are wildly subjective. |

#1. The sex scene isn’t disappearing – it’s simply shifting Writing during what seems – in retrospect – to have been the wildly carefree summer of 2019, Washington Post film critic Ann Hornaday lamented that “sex is disappearing from the big screen. Fast forward two years, and, improbably enough, it’s conservative New York Times columnist Ross Douthat who’s pleading for “sex and romance make a comeback at the movies.” |

[feature_headline type=”left, center, right” level=”h2″ looks_like=”h3″ icon=”lightbulb-o”] Our randomized trailer pick of the week [/feature_headline]
Each week we take a number from 1 to 10 from our list of suggestions and put it through a randomizer to choose a trailer to show you. This week it landed on our number 5 spot, “11 long-running South African soaps, series and telenovelas to stream“, so we spun the wheel again and it landed on Binnelanders:
Set in the hallways of the Binneland Kliniek in Pretoria, the day-to-day dealings of everyone from nurses and patients, to surgeons and hospital board members comes under the microscope. It’s like getting jabbed with an adrenaline shot straight to the heart or having a defibrillator cranked up to full charge and pressed against your chest to bring you back to life.
With the amount of drama taking place in the characters’ lives – from falling in love with their patients, to defending the hospital against a hostile takeover or even industrial espionage – it’s a surprise that there’s time to do any actual medical work.
