Sometimes when you sit down to unwind with movies, you just need to watch something that’s not too taxing on the old noggin. Those type of movies where you chill with a dop and check social media every now and again, not really caring about the plot. More than often, your run of the mill action movies fall within this category. I’m not talking about the complicated movies with intricate and surprising plot twist like the Jason Bourne franchise. I’m talking about movies where there is just a lot of action and people get fucked up very lelik. Plot lines? Pfft! What are those? I have however, included a “dink so bietjie” series as well and you have to pay a little attention to at least one of the movies when you watch it. You brain needs a little bit of food, after all..
Angel Has Fallen
After training in the facility of his friend Wade Jennings, Mike Banning travels with his team to protect President Trumbull in a fishing trip. Hmmm, Trumbull? Sounds like Trump that’s full of bullshit. I’m sure that was intentional. His team gets attacked by drones which kills eighteen agents and only the wounded Mike and Trumbull who is now in a coma, survives. Mike awakes in the hospital, cuffed to his bed and accused of attempting to assassinate the president. He was totes framed and the story gains momentum from here. That drone scene fokken hectic. This is a lekker movie!
From the peanut gallery:
“The Secret Service is of no use if the President gets attacked every 2 years and only one man is enough to save him!”
Legacy of Lies
This is a typical action movie recipe: PKs, gunfights, car chases, and big explosions. An ex-MI6 agent is thrown back into the world of espionage and high stakes to uncover the shocking truth about operations conducted by unknown secret services.
From the peanut gallery:
“The most underrated martial artist. He needs to be in John Wick 4/5 and we need another undisputed!”
The Hunt
Twelve peeps who don’t know each other from a brick of cocaine wake up in a clearing without any memory of who the fuck they are, where they are or how the fuck they got there. Turns out some cunty rich people gather at a remote location to hunt humans for sports. That’s SO fucked up! One of the hunted, Crystal, manages to escape and turns the tables on her pursuers. This sounds so terrifying that I might watch it during the day. This movie had its own fair share of challenges. The release date had to be moved forward because America likes to have mass shootings from time to time. When things calmed down enough, the COVID-19 pandemic rocked up and fucked them for a second time.
From the peanut gallery:
“Me: mom can we have hunger games?
Mom: no, we have hunger games at home
Hunger games at home – this movie:”
Rambo: Last Blood
This movie could possibly go to the summit of Mount Fuck The Plot. Really, people just get shot to shit all the time, but hey – it is Rambo and if you’ve watched the first four movies, you’re gonna have to watch one. Yuppp! This is movie number 5 of the franchise. It has been almost four decades after they drew first blood. In this movie, Rambo must confront his past and unearth his ruthless combat skills to exact revenge in a final mission. What is this mission? I’ll take “vengeance” for R5k, please John. This is the only Rambo movie where Rambo doesn’t wear his dirty red bandana. I feel cheated…
From the peanut gallery:
“This movie is like a R rated Home Alone.”
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
Back in the 90s Steven Seagal used to fuck people up six love in the most creative ways. When he snapped someone’s arm 120 degrees in the opposite direction, you felt it in your own poephol. Sometimes you could even feel it in your left tekkie. He seemed irreplaceable. That is until John Wick rocked up. Now THAT guy can fuck you up with precision, speed and effectivity. He is like a killing robot. Keanu mos has that deadpan robot face. In this third installment our deadly assassin, John Wick returns with a $14 million price tag on his head and an army of bounty-hunting killers on his ass. He doesn’t say much in the movie and he doesn’t have to. Action speak louder than words and there is plenty of if to go around. The final scene with the glass structure where John fights Shinobi 1 and Shinobi 2 cost $4 million to construct. That’s pretty much the budget of all Leon Schuster’s movies ever made, his house, all his cars and everyone that worked with him’s retirement funds.
From the peanut gallery:
“He’s not the Boogeyman. He’s the guy you send to kill the Boogeyman.”
Band of Brothers
One of the highest rated series of all time (9.4) and probably your first introduction to the brilliant actor, Damian Lewis, from Billions , (which is now it its 5th season). It is an epic war miniseries, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks wherein a group of unassuming American men are thrust into the horrors of World War II. It is also the true story of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army and was based on interviews with survivors. I’ve been itching to re-watch this series which is now just over 20 years old.
From the peanut gallery:
“Simply stated: This true story miniseries was the finest cinematic production I have ever seen in my entire life. To those of you who have not seen it but plan to, I envy you. I wish I could watch this once again for the first time. Though it was a miniseries, and technically not a movie, for a very long time it was the highest rated ANYTHING on Internet Movie Database topping even The Godfather, Shawshank Redemption and Shidler’s List.”

#5 Team Josh or Team Charles? All seasons of Younger now streaming Set in the publishing world of New York City, Younger has kept us guessing for six seasons: will Liza choose Josh (Nico Tortorello from The Walking Dead: World Beyond), the gorgeous tattoo artist who made her feel she’d rediscovered her true self as a fake 26-year-old in a competitive, ageist industry; or her boss, the suave, romantic and, yes, traditional, Charles (Peter Hermann from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Blue Bloods)? |

#2 Workin’ Moms S5 is safe and reliable – and we can’t wait for Season 6 It’s a telling point when you Google Season 5 of Workin’ Moms and the first page is filled with clickbait about Season 6. There are 10 short episodes in Season 5 (an easy one-night or one-afternoon binge, you’ll barely have time to get up to fetch a glass of wine), which still manage to pack in a heck of a lot, and in the finale there are multiple threads that demand explaining – and therefore another season. The only question, really, is when. |

#1 Stream these nostalgic shows and movies that have stood the test of time Nostalgia is truly a super weird phenomenon. It kind of operates like love in the sense that it bypasses logical thinking and directly goes for the jugular – it accesses one’s emotions. Every one of us has developed. to a certain degree, a longing for our younger years – the games we played, the food we ate, the music we listened to and the movies and TV shows that we watched. |
