[alert type=”muted” close=”false” heading=”Our top 10 weekly selection of DSTV Now | Showmax | YouTube | Netflix | Amazon Prime”]
There is actually an overload of entertainment this weekend, especially when you’re into sports. I’m completely not one of those people. I completely stopped watching local cricket and rugby altogether when interference on all possible fronts left a bad taste in the mouth. I only watch the big events now like the World Cup for instance. There is also the Boks taking on the British and Irish Lions this weekend, but I don’t think I’ll tune in for that.
So what will I be watching then? I will be tuning in to the 2020 Olympics from time to time, seeing that there are kak loads of channels to hop through and this will happened throughout the entire weekend when I take breaks from my suggested list below. And the list below will take a backseat for the weekend’s F1 Hungarian Grand Prix, starting this afternoon – there is free practice at 14:00. Saturday at 11:00 there is another free practice, followed by the qualifying at 14:00 and finally the big race on Sunday at 15:00. This is all thanks to the series, Formula 1: Drive to Survive. It got me into F1 big time and this only happened 2 weeks ago. I’m so into F1 now, that I’m considering covering in on Wat Kyk Jy.
For those who are totally fokol into sport, hopefully the list below can sort you out for the weekend.
There is a lekker mixed bag of old and new movies, doccies and series to stream!
The oldies
Rome
I somehow missed this 8.7 rated gem from 2005, probably because I was living in Nigeria at the time. Now I I get to stream this historical drama! It tells the story of the turbulent transition from Roman republic to an autocratic empire. Get to know all the kak that is Julius Caesar.
From the peanut gallery:
“The end of Spartacus was the reason I looked up “Rome”.
Snakes on a Plane
Neville Flynn (Samuel L. Jackson) has to escort a witness on a plane to LA but an assassin who wants to kill the witness has released a crate containing about 450 snakes onto the plane. Neville has to get the snakes back on land or send them to snake heaven. Although we all know the phrase “I’ve had it with all these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!” I have never ever seen this movie and I honestly don’t know why. I’m watching it on Sunday just before the Grand Prix!
From the peanut gallery:
“I don’t sit on the toilet no more because of the damn movie!”
Empire Falls
Fokkit, what a blast of an all-star cast!
Ed Harris, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Helen Hunt and Paul Newman lead an all-star cast in this two-part miniseries event based on Richard Russo’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel – Empire Falls, is an economically depressed mill town in Maine. Miles Roby, who’s run the town’s top restaurant for some twenty years is surrounded by his newly thin wife, meddling father, and hostile boss. He seems stuck. This is a dik drama, so if you’re in the mood for tears, this is it!
From the peanut gallery:
“Brilliant movie. So gripping and stirring, I loved it.”
The Silence of the Lambs
Can you believe that this movie came out in 1991? Two decades later it still makes me kak my pants! Perplexed by a string of grisly murders elaborately executed by the elusive mass-killer nicknamed “Buffalo Bill”, the vulnerable and untried F.B.I. trainee, Clarice Starling, is assigned by the Special Agent, Jack Crawford, to assist in the manhunt. Hoping to attain a clearer perception of the psychopathic serial killer’s modus operandi, the young investigator reluctantly accepts the help of another hideous monster: the brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic mass-murderer, Dr Hannibal Lecter. This film redefined a genre, influenced pop-culture and changed the movie landscape forever. The reason why it came across my radar is because or the new series on DStv, Clarice, which takes place a year after the events from the movie. So watch the movie first and then start with the brand new series.
The new stuff
Allen v. Farrow
Can you imagine that one person’s sexual predatory behavior is so fokken large scale that a 4 part documentary was made of it. The is doccie goes behind the headlines to uncover the private story of one of Hollywood’s most notorious scandals: the accusation of sexual abuse against Woody Allen involving Dylan and Mia Farrow. Even as a child, I never liked the guy. What a piece of shit! Why is this man not in jail yet?
From the peanut gallery:
“I don’t mind age gaps in relationships. But the fact that he married the adoptive daughter of his ex-wife, whom he once treated as a stepdaughter, is beyond creepy and disgusting.”
Midway
Woody Harrelson, Patrick Wilson and Luke Evans star in this real-event-based WWII drama about the Battle of Midway, which was a clash between U.S. and Japanese militaries. It marked a pivotal turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. It is a true drama of following instincts and displaying fortitude and bravery to overcome the odds.
From the peanut gallery:
“An excellent movie with no distractions (such as romances, etc.) and a lot of action. It also shows the battle from both sides, which was very beneficial. It was dedicated to the sailors and pilots from both sides of the battle.”
The Good Lord Bird
Holy fokken shit, I started watching this last night and it is sooo good! Ethan Hawke is a fokken champ! Not only does he portray the main character, abolitionist John Brown, but he also created this limited series which feels like a cross between Brother Where Art Thou and Django Unchained. This is his best work by far. It is a humorous, dramatic and historical tapestry of Antebellum America. Expect the unexpected!
From the peanut gallery:
“It took a lot of heart and balls for John Brown to do what he did back then. Sacrificed not only himself but also his sons for people other than himself in a time where that was completely unheard of. He could’ve just sat back and enjoyed the fruits of other people’s labour. Salute to the man and his family. An extremely rare breed. I hope this series does his name justice.”
Robin’s Wish
To this day, Robin Williams is still one of my favourite actors and comedians. In August 2014, the world was shocked to find out that Robin Williams had died by suicide. For someone who brought so much humor to the world, it was a tragic, traumatic end. An intimate portrait of Robin Williams and his invulnerable spirit. The true story of what happened to one of the greatest entertainers of all time – and what his mind was fighting before his death. This doccie was released last year, so it is brand new. If you’re a fan like myself, you’ll dig into this 77 min doccie.
From the peanut gallery:
“It’s weird how much you can miss someone you didn’t even know, or even ever met. And it’s always the good ones that go.”
BONUS ROUND
Don’t forget to watch the brand new local crime drama series, Reyka, on Mnet this Sunday evening at 20:00. It is brilliant!

#10. Interview: Michael Phelps on HBO documentary The Weight of Gold With his unmatched agility and speed in the water, Michael Phelps holds the all-time record for Olympic gold medals earned. The closest thing to Aquaman on two legs, Phelps, like many pro athletes who have reach his rarified status, was placed on a pedestal that was unsustainable. For more than a decade, Phelps’ life was a relentless march towards breaking Olympic records, out-swimming his competition as he trained and travelled the world collecting gold medals and corporate endorsement deals. |

#7. Heist is “a fun true-crime series with a lot of heart” As the trailer says, think about it … if you had an opportunity to steal something, anything, significant – without getting caught or facing consequences – would you do it? Deep inside, we probably all have that urge or secret desire; some people follow up on it, others do not. |

#6. The sexiest movies and series to stream They say that chivalry is dead (and good riddance, frankly – we’re all capable of opening our own car doors, thank you very much) and old-fashioned romance might be going the same way.But it’s not all bad news – for all the cynics, singletons and red-blooded humans out there, Showmax brings the steamiest 18+ rated content you’ll find on any streaming platform. |

#5. Sonic the Hedgehog, Pacific Rim, Anna and more movies for gamers Films and popular games have much more in common than you’d think. Movies try to immerse you in another world, often presenting a central character, their mission and telling a story. The same can be said for board and video games, as CGI, VFX, digital characters and adaptations draw these illusive worlds even closer together. |

# 4. Watch: The first-look trailer for Temptation Island South Africa The ultimate relationship test, Temptation Island South Africa — based on the Banijay-owned hit reality format — follows couples at a crossroads in their relationship, where they must mutually decide if they are ready to commit to one another for the rest of their lives, or go their separate ways. |

#3. 10 superhero and sci-fi movies to inspire your next winning cosplay outfit Cosplay has got nothing to do with lettuce. While it may be fun to dress a crunchy salad in some olive oil, it’s not quite as glorious as walking around with a red cape and hinting at your kryptonite allergy. Kids gravitate to dress-up, donning the outfit of their heroes and make-believe at a time when our imagination often gets the better of us. For those who’ve made a conscious effort to keep nourishing this fun knockabout spirit, cosplay allows us to keep dreaming into adulthood. |
