It is a brand new year, or so we try and tell ourselves. As far as I can see, 2021 is joined to 2020 by the hip and we’re only done with week number 2. We are truly living through the strangest of times and while it feels like we’re in this fokken weird parallel universe where we have to stay at home, mostly, why not try and make the best of it? How about some distraction in the form of really awesome TV shows to stream? They’re all brand new and yes, Fargo, Vikings and His Dark Materials count as brand new, because they released brand new seasons.
Fargo
This series is based on the movie of the same name but it is one of those rare instances where the series is better than movie. A suspense-filled dark comedy with intrigue, deception and murder which plays out around frozen Minnesota. I will need to re-watch the first 3 seasons as recap before I watch season 4 and I have absolutely no problem with that.
Vikings
Vikings tells the story of Ragnar Lothbrok’s band of Viking brothers and his family. He is a fearless warrior who rises to become King of the Vikings and legend has it that he was sommer a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war. You can now watch the sixth and final season of Vikings and it is intensely emotional. I just had to post a picture of this MAGA-asshole who stormed the United States Capitol who is the complete opposite of a warrior. Also if he has the funniest Afrikaans nick name ever: Ragnar Losbroek.
His Dark Materials
His Dark Materials is decsribed as one of the supreme works of imaginative fiction for both children and adults published in the 20th century. It follows the story of Lyra, an orphan, who lives in a parallel universe in which science, theology and magic are entwined. Her search for a kidnapped tjommie uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children! You can catch new episodes every Tuesday, Express from the U.S.!
Slot
A brilliant and renowned psychiatrist develops a drug that can immediately penetrate patients’ subconscious to give access to underlying traumas. I haven’t seen this yet but it looks and sound fantastic and the best part is that it is a brand new local series and Jozua Malherbe, Albert Pretorius and Rolanda Marais are involved so I expect top quality!
4 Mure
Another local series that sounds totally befok! This is a limited series of five episodes set in the same hotel room with five different stories, five different genres and by the sound of it, Marcelina, the charming yet incompetent hotel cleaner at the center of it all. Deffo’s gonna give this a kyk! The first episode is available and the second one should drop just after the weekend.
Filthy Rich
The Monreauxes is a Southern family and they are fokken rich because of their moerse successful Christian TV network. Tragedy strikes and leaves wife and mother Margaret (Kim Cattrall) in charge of the family business.
The Undoing
HBO, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant. These names already tells you it will be befok. The undoing is a limited series which focuses on Nicole Kidman as Grace Fraser, a successful therapist, and her devoted husband, Jonathan (Hugh Grant), and their laitie. A violent death and a missing spouse set the wheels in motion for this crime and drama mystery.
Industry
Another HBO series got my immediate attention – a group of young graduates compete for a limited set of permanent positions at a top investment bank in London. I know it sounds boring as fuck, but trust me, it ain’t!

# 9. The latest season of Fargo delivers quirky characters and mobsters in cahoots The 1996 film, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, pretty much put these brothers on the cinematic map. Fargo was followed by The Big Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou?, which both became cult classics. |

#8 Lupin: you’ll be furious when it’s snatched away after five episodes No, no Netflix. Why are you like this? Lupin is a crime drama series comprising 10 episodes; there are five available to stream now. Each one ends on a suitably strong cliffhanger but the fifth is just cruel, especially since these are the only episodes available to stream until Part 2 arrives at an undisclosed future date. |

#7 Netflix’s History of Swear Words is a fun foray into profanity Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me: probably the biggest lie of childhood and far more damaging in the long term than Santa, Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy combined. While they have the power to uplift, encourage, insult and torment, words are still just words, right? Well, yes and no. |

#5 Three Afrikaans movies about the South African queer experience I may be preaching to the choir, here, but you’re never too old or too open-minded to learn new things, and that is why I’d like to present you with 23 things I learned from Afrikaans queer movies on Showmax. Because The L Word and Modern Family are good places to start, but we need some local spice. |

#3 Where to legally watch the most pirated TV series in South Africa It’s well-documented that besides the obvious legality issues, piracy brings a whole host of risks to users, including infections from viruses and other malware, and that these lead to data breaches of everything from browsing activity to banking login details. |
