It is basically full-blown summer in South Africa right now which means that a lot of us will braai and kuier kakhard on Saturdays and spend our Sundays on the couch, crying and nursing a groot babelaas and not moving a lot. This normally happens in front of the TV with the aircon blasting. The best way to relax with a groot kop is with ASMR-type TV. What is ASMR? It is a relaxing, often sedative sensation that begins on the scalp and moves down the body. Also known as a “brain massage” and it is triggered by placid sights and sounds such as whispers, accents, and crackles. It is basically Sir David Attenborough’s voice soothing you to sleep. We’ve come across 7 doccies which will relax your fokken boude. The first three are only available until next Saturday, so maybe start with them first.

Spy in the Wild infiltrates the animal world using animatronic creatures and hidden cameras disguised as everything from eggs to dung balls. These give us some of the closest-ever views of animal friendships, love and mischief. More than 30 animatronic spy cameras were disguised as animals to secretly record behavior in the wild. The series captures rarely seen behavior that reveals how animals possess emotions and behavior similar to humans – including the capacity to love, grieve, deceive and invent. Brilliant stuff.
Chasing the Sun
You might have come across this on DStv right before you want to slit your wrists watching Carte Blanche. If you don’t have DStv, you can luckily catch it on Showmax. This is a 5-part series which takes a behind-the-scenes look into the Springboks’ 2019 Rugby World Cup triumph. All 5 episodes will be available to binge from 6pm on Monday 2 November. This is some inspiring stuff. In fact, ask your boss to stream it at work every Friday while you sneak a beer or two. It is good for team building and team building is good for South Africa. This is what we need right now.

#6 The Train of Salt & Sugar is an African cross-country adventure with powerful social themes The Train of Salt & Sugar made history as the first Oscar foreign-language entrant for Mozambique. A landmark film for the country, it is laden with historical significance and set during the Mozambican Civil War. The African conflict spanned 15 years as armed rebels restricted the free flow of basic commodities such as sugar, which became precious enough for civilians to risk their lives, travelling hundreds of miles by rail in order to trade salt for sugar in Malawi.

4# This stylish series is “the most fun you can have watching chess” It gives me enormous pleasure to inform you that The Queen’s Gambit is quite possibly the best thing to happen this year. I say “possibly” because it’s been a frightfully long year and it’s hard to believe it also contained Tiger King, which feels like a lifetime ago. There may have been some equally excellent shows or movies in 2020 but for the life of me, I cannot name a single one at this moment as all pales in comparison.

#2 The most revealing interviews in Chasing the Sun so far SuperSport’s five-part documentary about the Springboks’ momentous journey to winning the 2019 Rugby World Cup is personal, poignant and sensitively told. Interviews with players and crew have shown a candour and depth of emotion linked to both their on- and off-field experiences in Japan last year.

#1 Where to find Mzansi’s meanest mothers International soap operas may think that they set the standard when it comes to mean moms – like Bold & Beautiful’s Stephanie Forrester, who repeatedly called Brooke “that whore from the Valley” – but they’ve got nothing on Mzansi’s meanest mothers.

[feature_headline type=”left, center, right” level=”h2″ looks_like=”h3″ icon=”lightbulb-o”] Our randomized trailer pick of the week [/feature_headline]
Each week we take a number from 1 to 10 from our list of suggestions and put it through a randomizer to choose a trailer to show you. This week it landed on our number 2 spot, “Halloween horror kicks off with The Haunting of Bly Manor” – my wife wanted to watch it earlier this week and I was like “Fuck no! We have to watch it during the day, I can’t watch scary shit at night!”
From the producers of The Haunting of Hill House comes a new ghost story. The Haunting of Bly Manor arrives October 9th, only on Netflix. The Haunting of Bly Manor stars Victoria Pedretti, Henry Thomas, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, T’Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Amelie Smith and Amelia Eve.
