We normally dig around for a bit on a Thursday evening or a Friday morning to find themes or genres when it comes to our weekend streaming entertainment. I don’t just switch on the TV and click around to watch something just because I have a TV and the interwebs. It is, for the most part, a planned exercise. Whatever we don’t get time for over the weekend, spills over to the evenings during the week and we always have something lekker to watch. Last night I decided to just check out the “new” tab and I came across quite a lot of lekker stuff.
Here is my list of seven new titles I found to stream over the weekend and beyond:
Ekstra Medium
Let’s kick with with two new local series first. Both are Afrikaans, both come with sub titles and both got me very excited. In Ekstra Medium, the main character, Bertie, opens a cocktail bar in a disastrous attempt to forget about his divorce and his looming midlife crisis. His place quickly becomes the hangout for friends, family and strangers. Watch a new episode of season 1 every week! Here is an entire article on why you should watch it.
Kompleks
At first I thought that this was the series from the early 2000’s which my tjommie Hannes Brummer starred in but quickly learned that it is a brand new local series, narrated by Koos Kombuis. It is a love story that spans years and universes. In one, Sean and Mica are very different matrics, looking at the stars. In the other universe, they’re lonely adults, looking for love. As with Ekstra Medium, there is a new episode each week from their first season, with the first 3 currently available. You’ll be hooked within the first 2 minutes. It looks very promising!
Replicas
There it is in all its glory – Keanu Reeve’s deadpan face again (see John Wick further down in the list as well). I haven’t seen this movie yet but I am very curious as to see how old Keanu was cast as a scientist. Apparently his character, William Foster, is prepared to go to great lengths to bring back the family he lost in a tragic car accident – including trying to defeat the laws of physics. Fuck, OK, now I kind of get an idea of where the weird memes came from that were going around. I still don’t get it the meme itself, so I guess the movie will clarify things. At 5.5 it would be worth a laugh at least?
World on Fire
This is one of those series that I have to make time for on my own as the wife watches fokol war dramas, which is 100% what this 7.2 rated series is. It is a British WWII drama which tells stories of the devastating effects of war on people living in the US, Britain and Europe. The cast is headed up by Sean Bean and Helen Hunt. Looks like my Sunday morning between 5am and 9am is sorted.
Sigh…
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
Keanu Reeves. He’s been looking the same since 1536 and his facial expression seemingly never changes, no matter which role he takes on but we love him stukkend. His John Wick ratings also don’t really change, hanging out at a respectable 7.4, all three of them. Yes, he can moer you stukkend and this super assassin is back with Chapter 3 where he is on the run from an army of ruthless hitmen who are after the $14-million price on his head. Why? Because he killed a member of the international assassins’ guild. To be honest, I clutched out on this movie a bit because there was just too much action for my brain. The same thing happened with Iron Man 2 back in the day. It is like the GPU in my brain overheats or something. Maybe you will handle it better?
Condor
Joe Turner is a low-level CIA agent who comes across a plan that threatens millions of lives. This also leads to his co-workers being executed and he is determined to find out who was behind the assassinations and the reason behind it. This series is based on the novel Six Days of the Condor by James Grady. If like myself, you missed out on this action thriller on DStv, you can now catch it on Showmax. Plenty of drama as well in this 7.8 stunner.
Green Book
It is the year 1962 and “Tony Lip” Vallelonga is tough Italian-American bouncer is out of work when the night club he works at is closed for renovations. He gets hired as the driver for an African-American classical pianist who’s on a tour of the American South and they begin their trek armed with The Negro Motorist Green Book, a travel guide for safe travel through America’s racial segregation. This biographical comedy-drama won best picture at the Oscars in 2019 and stands tall at a rating of 8.2

#1 Seven reasons to watch Afrikaans dramedy Ekstra Medium It has become very apparent that South Africa’s creatives aren’t interested in taking a back seat at all when it comes to entertaining us with locally produced TV series that make for gripping viewing.
