It seems that the entire South Africa, bar Kimberley, is under grey cloud cover today. Weather and watching TV pairs like cheese and wine, or wine and crackers. Or dooswyn and whatever. When the sun is out, you watch sports and comedy. When it is overcast and rainy, you klap some horror, drama or doccies. This weekend seems like it might be a grey one, so let’s klap some medical dramas. I’ve discovered some pretty good ones and arranged it from the lowest to highest rating.
Rancid
We’re kicking off with a locally produced movie from 2011. Four people sign up for medical experiments, each with their own agenda. Locked in a remote facility, they’re left to figure out what part they’re supposed to play. But the experiment quickly devolves into a fight for survival. I don’t really know any of the actors, but the main actor, Brendan Auret was in Chappie as well.
Maaaaan, I love this show! My friends used to tape it for me on VHS while I was living in Nigeria for 4 years and every 6 months I would come back and binge it with a few doppe and have a laugh. A medical doctor, doctor Jinx, has a bike and a band. He is a cool Afrikaans rock ‘n roll doctor from Pretoria who meets a poor waitress who hates all men. On the evening she meets the rock-doc, she also loses her job because her boss is a bit of a dooskoop. Lots of drama ensues but the funnest thing for me is to see how my friend, Valiant Swart’s acting goes from bordering on kak to actually very impressive! The series has cool storyline and it is a lekker nostalgic trip down memory lane! It is rated at 6.7 but I would reckon it a tad above 7.
Bypass
In the children’s ward of St Luke’s Hospital, little 9-yearl old Sam Cooper is at the top of the transplant list for a new liver. His mom, Dr Lisa Cooper, happens to be the head of cardiac surgery at the same hospital. A liver finally becomes available but it is destroyed en route to hospital. Feeling completely helpless and unable to save her laitie, the alternative of an illegal organ becomes her only option. Groot kak en drama. Definitely a solid 7 and the first movie I’m watching this weekend!
The Innocent Man
And now for something completely different! This is a Korean drama series. Kang Ma-Ru is a promising medical student, until he takes the blame for a crime he didn’t commit. When he finds an opportunity for revenge, he takes it, using Seo Eun-Gi. Ma-Ru soon discovers that are things more important than revenge, though. If you don’t mind subtitles, go for it! This series clocks in at very respectable 7.8 rating.
Ghost In The Shell: The Laughing Man
This doesn’t quite fit in with the traditional medical drama theme, but we can’t leave anime fans hanging – A criminal known only as The Laughing Man is sweeping through top medical nanotechnology firms and committing acts of cyber-terrorism, kidnapping, extortion, and corporate espionage, leaving no known suspects. What’s not to like about this? It ranks up there (8) along the top 10 animation titles from over the last 2 decades.
New Amsterdam
My wife is totally hooked on this show! That kakgevaarlike guy from The Blacklist, (Ryan Eggold) plays the role of Dr Max Goodwin who takes over as medical director at America’s oldest public hospital. This might sound familiar, but he bends the rules and challenges the status quo to provide the best medical care possible. The difference between Dr Goodwin and Dr Gregory House is that Dr Goodwin is more compassionate and less of a doos.
8.1 and well deserved
The Knick
A historical medical drama series which takes a look at the professional and personal lives of the staff of New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital during the early part of the twentieth century. Clive Owen stars as Dr John Thackery, the leader of the surgical staff. His character is partially based on a real-life surgeon of that era but the hospital is a fictionalized version of the real thing. At 8.5 I’m for sure watching this with the wife. Two seasons of ten episodes each, done and dusted – a story with a beginning and an end!
House
What would this list be without the highest rated (8.7) medical drama ever produced? If you haven’t watched an episode of the antisocial dickhead but maverick, doctor House yet, you need to make a plan and start right away. Get your fix of witty wisecracks and baffling cases with all eight seasons of this smash-hit show starring Hugh Laurie as Dr Gregory House.
If you’re doing a media study thesis, you might consider the theme Why ‘It’s never lupus’ after watching a season or 2.
