As we prepared to go into level 2 of lockdown, just over two weeks ago, we looked at movies related to alcohol abuse. So why not also look into drugs? Don’t worry, I’m not going to try and persuade you to inject mayonnaise between your toes or inhale Spray ‘n Cook from a Jiffy bag. Let’s leave the 90s in the 90s. Today’s list is more about crime element in movies where drugs form part of the theme. An intricate drug related crime story sounds way better than a shipment of illegal Granny Smith apples which gets intercepted at the Durban harbor. Someone, prove me wrong and make that movie!
Or just work your way through these titles over the weekend, while NOT doing drugs. Have some beer, chippies and MSG, in stead.
Look, this movie is local and I could’t find a rating for it. That’s why it is first on the list. It doesn’t necessarily mean that it is kak. Plus it is based on a true story and any true story about drugs will be super sad. Like in Francois’ case – he was rejected by his father and started looking for salvation in all the wrong places. The wrong places normally involve drugs and alcohol, Francois was on the path to ruin. but then God showed him the way. The only reason why I won’t watch this is because of the religion thing, but you mos know the Afrikaans-in-the-Spar has mos space for church and dop in his heart at the same time. Hierdie een is dan vir julle manne.
An extremely kak person breaks out of jail. We’re talking murdering rapist kind of bad. While a fugitive from the law, as bad luck would have it, he ends up at the Apartment of Ashley Smith – a recovering meth addict and takes her hostage.
At 5.4 I will give this a shot on Sunday afternoon.
2 Fast 2 Furious
Full disclosure: I have never ever watched any of the Fast & The Furious movie. Really, no jokes! I can’t with Vin Diesel. At all. I know 99.9% of you disagree and that’s why I kept it on the list. You probably also klap 7de Laan of which I have also never ever watched a single episode. I will have to take drugs to watch hit. Talking of drugs – in the action-packed sequel, Brian O’Connor is on a mission to redeem himself. He goes undercover once again, with the help of an ex-con and fellow agent, dik determined to bring down a drug kingpin, I’m told. Maybe I should do a Fast & Furious challenge at some point and try and watch all of them. Jissis, there are already 11 of them out there and another 2 on the way!
5.9 ain’t kak, but I will wait until 2022 and do a marathon and see if I die from it…
This was ‘n fokken lekker movie and easy to watch. Joe (played by Jason Momoa) and his dad get into a moerse bar fight after the dad mistakes a woman for his wife. The toppie has dementia, so totes honest mistake, really. Father and son decide to go chill their remote cabin for a relaxing weekend and to forget about the kak but they find heroin stashed there by drug traffickers. They have to fight for their lives when the traffickers return to claim their goods. Have you seen Mr Mamoa’s muscles? Of course he is going to fokken moer the okes dik!
Befokte action at a solid 6!
A lekker dark comedy action with our own Charlize Theron as the leading lady. An unassuming and and businessman walking the straight and narrow is sent to Mexico to deliver an experimental pill but gets kidnapped by a drug cartel. Oh, there is another South African in the mix- Sharlto Copley from District 9!
Six point one, bru!
From South African Hollywood stars, back to home soil. Cape Town to be more specific. A drug deal goes south and leaves Randal wheelchair-bound and unable to leave his flat. With fokol to do, he spies on his neighbours with binoculars that he got from his cherry and witnesses something that could possibly change his situation. This is a lekker drama and action thriller, coming in at a strong 6.3. Support local en kykie ding, masekind!
Lucy has been on my one of my lists before and I really like this fliek. Scarlett Johansson kick serious ass in this story and I hope they franchise this at some point. Her character, Lucy, is tricked into being a drug mule who has a valuable drug sewn into her stomach. The drug is released into her body by accident and she becomes poes strong. Superhuman abilities, as a matter of fact, which she uses to escape her captors.
It is totally under rated at 6.4 because this movie has so much to offer.
Real-life besties Seth Rogen and James Franco share the screen once more as two weed-smoking friends who become entangled in a web of dangerous drug dealers. My favourite actor from this movie, however, is Danny McBride. To me, Seth Rogen is the Vin Diesel of comedy. I can’t his zol laugh. But again, 6.9 proves that most of you okes will dig it.
We end off our list for today, not with a movie, but one of the strongest shows of 2019. This is serious stuff and you need to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate it. It is a brilliant series and 1000% adults only. Zendaya (who needs a surname when you’re that good of an actress?) stars in this HBO series which follows a group of high school students as they navigate a minefield of drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love and friendship in today’s increasingly unstable world. Again, make sure your brain can handle this kak. It is pretty rough.
Top of today’s food chain at 8.4.

[feature_headline type=”left, center, right” level=”h2″ looks_like=”h3″ icon=”lightbulb-o”] Our randomized trailer pick of the week [/feature_headline]
Each week we take a number from 1 to 10 from our list of suggestions and put it through a randomizer to choose a trailer to show you. This week it landed on our number 7 spot, “HBO’s Perry Mason is an origin story that’s “noir enough”” and at some point we’ll deal with that show in detail, because there is so much to unpack:
In 1932, Los Angeles is prospering while the rest of the U.S. is recovering from the grip of the Great Depression. Down-and-out private investigator Perry Mason is struggling with his trauma from The Great War and being divorced. He’s hired for a sensational child kidnapping trial and his investigation portends major consequences for Mason, his client, and the city itself. Starring Matthew Rhys, this legal drama series from HBO looks at the origin story of famed defense lawyer Perry Mason.
