Am I jumping the gun here? I don’t think so. I think the time has come. Maybe we’re lucky. Maybe South African Presdient, Cyril Ramapostponement will announce tonight that South Africa will be moving into lockdown level 2. I am pretty sure he is going to lift the ban on alcohol and tobacco sales, but I don’t think it will happen immediately. I reckon he is gonna tune us that inter-provincial travel will be allowed, schools will start opening and that pubs and restaurants will be able to operate as per usual by the end of August. I think flu season is more or less over for us. Summer is on the way. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for America who is heading into winter as well as natural disaster season. Kak gaan spat in Trump land and Trump is gonna see his fokken gat in November while all this other kak is flying around them.
So let’s have a sigh of relief for ourselves at lease and at the same time sommer have a lag at our local okes who will soon be able to make money in front of live audiences again:
Schalk Bezuidenhout
This Kempton Park marabs with the curly hair and kak tasete for jerseys won the 2013 Comics Choice Newcomer Award, was nominated as Breakthrough Act of the Year in 2014, and won the Intermediate Award in 2015. He has equally endeared himself to audiences across cultures and countries and made people the poes in. Skhumba called “the one white comedian loved by black people”. In Snorseun and Schalkie, his third Afrikaans and English one-man shows respectively, Schalk once again has a go at himself, Afrikaner identity and preconceptions in general.
Tsitsi Chiumya
You don’t know him, so I’m gonna tell you about Tsitsi – he necame the first black video game designer to graduate from Wits but his success in stand-up comedy totally fucked up his gaming career plans. Named the Comics Choice Best Newcomer in 2018, Tsitsi won the 2019 Next Level Award, and hosted last year’s Savanna Newcomer Showcase. He’s also earned a SAFTA for script-writing as part of the team behind Puppet Nation. He is a master of observational comedy and totes awkies stories and has performed across South Africa and Zambia, Europe and the US. Catch him in So Naive
Jason Goliath
This oke was nominated for Best Newcomer in the 2012 Comics Choice Awards abd went on to scoop the Nando’s Best Friend of Comedy Award for three years running, from 2015 to 2017, with his co-owned entertainment company, Goliath & Goliath. The Goliath-family do a shitload of good for the comedy scene in South Africa. Catch him in Manstruation: Surviving a Wife where he laughs at life’s uncomfortable truths and making the everyday hilarious; as well as Live at Parker’s where he brings his big personality to the stage in this hit set at Parker’s Comedy Club.
Rikus de Beer (Radio Raps)
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to Radio Raps. Almost all his stuff is available on Showmax. There is the Radio Raps Show where internet sensation Jonathan from Radio Raps gives his unvarnished opinions on South Africa, parenting, food and more; the Radio Raps Tour where he fills you in on all the life lessons you’ve been missing, his one-man show, Laat Ek Jou So Sê; Radio Raps: Life 101 and Radio Raps: Life 201 for more tongue-in-cheek life lessons; Dingetjies en Goetertjies where he discusses life’s irritations, Genuine, where he delights the audience with his take on married life, the problems with social media groups and his thoughts on TV classics like Boer Soek ‘n Vrou and of course the very popular Chat ‘n Bietjie Ball where a sit down with the panel discusses all the tries, misses and burning issues around the latest Vodacom Super Rugby matches.
Dillan Oliphant
The fresh-faced fokker is fast making a name for himself because of his unusual smart approach to comedy making you think about the subjects he covers while you’re laughing your ass off, especially with his comedy special, In a Lonely Place <— this is the first thing I’m watching this weekend!
