I seriously don’t know what the fuck is up with this weather. We mos already went past the shortest day and longest evening on the 20th of June with the winter solstice what-what, so naturally my brain tells me that things should gradually improve in terms of winter slowly strolling off into the sunset. Yet, here we are – trucks in Cape Town getting blown over by gale force ice winds and then sending all that remaining cold kak to Gauteng. I was planning and looking forward to doing some work and chores outside in the fresh air, like cleaning the pool, painting some walls and doing some woodwork but the fokken miserably grey sky turned my attention to the interweb once again in stead, searching for things to keep my mind busy while under the covers and doing the absolute minimum, except for maybe lifting my elbow to klap a drink or ten. In fact, right after I have shared my list of series to watch this weekend with you, I am off to the shops to go get a bottle of… oh never fokken mind. It is mos Friday already and you can’t buy any fokken alcohol in South Africa because of the fokken COVID19 fokop.

Fuck sake.

Hopefully you have something to drink. Enjoy it with this list of entertainment
Get Shorty
I nearly skipped this one because I thought it was the movie from years yonder which I’ve already seen. This series is actually a remake of the hit movie (and based on a novel, naturally) and follows the antics of gangster Miles Daly (Chris O’Dowd) whose attempt at changing professions gets him tangled in a web of filmmakers and crime bosses.
Three seasons to get you going. This one is high on my list.

Billions
Damian Lewis is a kak rich hedge fund manager and Paul Giamatti (who you probably hate as any character her ever plays) as the US Attorney determined to make things kak for him. Ja, I know it is not a new series, but I wasn’t aware that we’re already at season 5 and the wife just confirmed that we’re only up to date as far as season 3. So bonus for me! I have an extra seasons I never knew I had!

Miracle Workers
It is like I’ve been waiting for something like this for a while now and I got excited reading up on this series – a workplace comedy set in Heaven, where the big boss (God) is ready to throw in the towel and move on to better things. To save Earth, two low-level angels join forces to pull off a miracle: helping two people fall in love. A brand new series with that guy with the fokken weird eyes, Steve Buscemi and Harry Potter.

Brittannia
Set in AD43, this gory historical drama tells of the Roman conquest of Britain, a mysterious land ruled by wild warrior women and powerful druids.
I would much rather live in world of powerful druids than a world of powerful assholes. And did someone say warrior women? Where do I hand in my membership forms?

I Know This Much is True
Jissis, what a boring and long-winded title for a series. But hang on, it actually sounds good. Mark Ruffalo (the Hulk!!) plays two roles as twin brothers, Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, who have a troubled relationship due to Thomas’s battle with mental illness. What is not to like about the  Incredible Hulk in a psychological thriller?

Das Boot
One day when I’m grown up, I will have a boat and I will name it Das Boot. It is a life long dream. This series however has parallel story lines which follow an inexperienced U-boat crew on a secret mission and a young German woman forced to question her loyalty to her country in this WWII drama. I nearly made the same minstake as I did with Get Shorty because I also initially thought that this was a movie. But it looks damn interesting! There aren’t many people who like history and war dramas, but for the few of us who do, well made stuff such as this is an absolute treat!

#10 The best true-crime shows on Netflix and Showmax
The last few years have seen a resurgence of the true-crime genre – which probably speaks volumes to the weird times we’re living in. But there’s something unique about true-crime stories: they allow us to explore the darkest, most gruesome, most deviant aspects of human nature from the safety of our warm and cosy couches.

# 9 Dive into Das Boot, the sublime subtitled submarine drama
This 2018 series, now on Showmax, is not to be confused with Wolfgang Petersen’s brilliant 1981 movie of the same name. It’s not a remake, and it’s not really a reboot, although it has been referred to as a “sequel” as the action takes place some months after the original setting.

#8 See Charlize Theron as an immortal soldier in Netflix’s The Old Guard
South African-born Charlize Theron has built up an incredibly diverse body of work, from her first credited role as the leggy hit woman in 2 Days In The Valley (1996), to sharing the screen with the leading men including Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, Johnny Depp and James McAvoy.

The fresh-faced British star was the youngest person ever to win the BAFTA for Leading Role, at the age of 14, has been married to Evan Rachel Wood, and has starred as a reformed skinhead, an SAS Lance Corporal, a nymphomaniac’s conquest who is known only as K, a young Peter Turner and Elton John’s lyricist.

#6 Seventeen out-of-this-world sci-fi series to watch online in South Africa
Science fiction, or sci-fi, can be one of the broadest, most difficult-to-explain genres in the known (and unknown) universe. It can pretty much be a dumping ground for everything that can’t be neatly slotted in anywhere else.

#5 Seven Stephen King adaptations to watch online
Stephen King is undoubtedly the most popular – and prolific – writer of horror fiction of our time. Many of his books, novellas and short stories have been adapted for the big and small screens. For example, The Body, from the collection titled Four Seasons, became the classic Stand By Me starring the late River Phoenix, and Keifer Sutherland.

4# Seventeen unmissable local reality shows to stream
Say the words “reality TV” and the first thing that comes to mind is one family, their non-stop drama and the uncanny way they’re famous for being, well, famous. But the genre is broad – it’s everything from ordinary people documenting their weddings to living on a deserted island and fighting for a million and switching from acting to dancing and everything in-between.

Please watch “Dark” the German Netflix series and give us a review of it. Believe me it is worth it. Such a brilliant series

We actually started watching it and currently struggling with the voice over vibes that doesn’t match the mouth movements. We’re not 7 anymore. Less easy to trick the adult brain. Unless you’re a Trump supporter, of course.
