Silence of the Lambs
Excitement ahead of National Braai Day is heating up with the announcement that the organisers will be giving away one whole lamb every day for the next two months until National Braai Day on 24 September. Jan Braai, head of the initiative had the following to say whilst stoking a fire: “We are in the middle of a revolution. A revolution of uniting 50 million South Africans around braai fires once a year. And during revolutions things die, in this case 60 lambs”.
But there is a modern twist. Jan Braai explained further, “Lighting fires and cooking meat on those fires is an ancient ritual, but in this instance we’re using technology to make it easy, very easy. There is a National Braai Day page on Facebook and it’s not hidden, it can be found at http://www.facebook.com/nationalbraaiday. Every day there is a new question like “What is your favourite wood?” or “Will you braai on 24 September”. All correct answers, i.e. all answers are entered into a random draw. And even for the draw we use technology. We use a random number generator on my computer”.
And the logistics of delivering sixty lambs all across South Africa? Not a problem, “we simply phone a local butcher in the town of the daily winner, and make arrangements with them for handing over a lamb to that person. It’s up to the winner whether to take a whole lamb ready for the spitbraai or to have it chopped up into well, chops”.
The catch? “There is no catch, we want the whole country to celebrate National Braai Day and will stop at nothing until we achieved that goal”.
Evidently not.
National Braai Day is a non-profit initiative with the sole aim of creating a national day of celebration and uniting the whole of South Africa, one day per year. With the help of the media spreading the message, this goal can be achieved within our lifetime.
